STILL FILLING THIS OUT, SHOULD HAVE MOST OF THE INFORMATION BY EOD MONDAY

WEEK 02

DEFORMERS & GENERATORS

+ SOME EXTRA STUFF

DEFORMERS

  • Deformers can do all kind of cool things to our objects! We can displace, bend, shear, taper, squash and stretch and much more

  • One very cool feature the Deformers offer are that they can be turned ON/OFF. They also can affect multiple objects at once

  • To use any of the Deformers, we must make the Deformer a child of the object we wish to affect by placing it underneath

DISPLACER DEFORMER

  • The DISPLACER deformer does exactly what it says; it DISPLACES geometry

  • SET UP

    • Make the DISPLACER a child of the object you want to displace

  • DRIVING THE DISPLACEMENT

    • The DISPLACER requires some sort of black/white source to drive the displacement

    • NOISE

      • Unless I am using some sort of image to do a very specific displacement, I typically start out with a NOISE

      • You can select a NOISE by clicking on the little Triangle next to the word SHADER under the Shading tab of the DISPLACERs Attributes

  • Depending on the amount of detail you’re looking for, you may need to add a ton of subdivisions to your geometry … ie; side of a cliff

COLLISION DEFORMER

  • The COLLISION deformer uses an object or other type of source to deform to the shape of that source

    More to come

SPLINES

  • If you need to create weird organic shapes that would be very difficult to model, splines come in handy

  • Within CINEMA4D

    • You can create these with the Pen tool, or you can start out with one of the default C4D spline shapes

  • From ILLUSTRATOR

    • You must save your file type as ILLUSTRATOR 8

      • File / Save As

      • Name then select Save

      • Version: Illustrator 8 (instead of Illustrator CC)

      • Drag new .Ai file into Cinema4D - Hit OK

EXTRUDE

  • The EXTRUDE tool can be used to create geometry from splines

    • Circles, Squares, Text, etc

Extrude01.png

SET UP

  • After you create your spline, you must make your SPLINE a child of the EXTRUDE for it to work

Extrude02.png

LOFT

  • The LOFT tool allows you to create organic forms by connecting splines

    • ie: Soda Can, Bowls, etc

Loft01.png

SET UP

  • Just like the extrude, you must make the SPLINEs children of the LOFT

  • The LOFT requires more than 1 spline to create geometry and the order of the splines is important

Loft02.png

SPLINE MASK

  • The SPLINE MASK works just like the BOOLE, but with SPLINES

    • You can Add objects together or subtract them from one another

SET UP

  • Make your SPLINEs children of the SPLINE MASK

    • In UNION mode, you can combine objects

    • In A subtract B the top item subtracts from the one underneath

    • etc

COMBINING TOOLS + TECHNIQUES

  • By combing just a few of the tools and techniques we’ve learned, we can create more complex shapes

    • Here we have a SPLINE MASK combining two splines that create an arch

    • Then we are using an EXTRUDE to extrude this new shape to create geometry

    • Then we are using a BOOLE to cut out the arch we just created to create a clean hole

TUTORIALS

  • Still need to record these
